In a momentous celebration of cultural heritage, Srinagar has been officially recognized as a ‘World Craft City’ by the World Crafts Council (WCC). The Certificate Award Ceremony, held today, marked a significant achievement for the city, which is now the fourth Indian city to receive this esteemed title.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who addressed the gathering, expressed his profound joy and pride in Srinagar’s new designation. “This recognition is not just an honor for Srinagar, but also a tribute to the 5000-year-old Indian civilization and its enduring artistic traditions,” Sinha remarked. He commended the World Crafts Council for their efforts in promoting global artistic traditions and emphasized the importance of preserving and enhancing Jammu and Kashmir’s unique cultural heritage.
The ceremony was attended by Sa’ad Hani Al-Qaddumi, President of the World Crafts Council, alongside other prominent members of the Council. Al-Qaddumi congratulated the J&K Government and highlighted Srinagar’s well-deserved place among the world’s craft cities.
During his address, the Lt Governor outlined the administration’s commitment to supporting local artisans and craftspeople through sustainable livelihood initiatives and global marketing opportunities. He praised the Handloom and Handicraft Department, along with the Industries and Commerce Department, for their crucial roles in advancing J&K’s craft sector.
Sinha also expressed his vision for Jammu and Srinagar to become leading art cities in India, dedicated to celebrating and nurturing artistic excellence. The Lt Governor released a publication commemorating the 60-year journey of the World Crafts Council, adding to the significance of the occasion.
The ceremony was marked by the presence of various dignitaries, including Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar, Advisor to the Lt Governor; Vikramjit Singh, Commissioner Secretary of the Industries & Commerce Department; and Dr. Hina Shafi Bhat, Vice Chairperson of J&K KVIB, along with a multitude of artisans and craftspeople.
Srinagar’s new title as a ‘World Craft City’ is set to enhance its global profile and reinvigorate the traditional craft sector, reaffirming its status as a hub of rich cultural and artistic heritage.
