New Delhi, Apr 28 : The Supreme Court has quashed a criminal case against Sukhbir Singh Badal, the former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, and others. The case pertained to allegations of cheating and criminal conspiracy in a land acquisition matter. The bench, comprising of Justices Rohinton Nariman and B.R. Gavai, dismissed the case citing lack of evidence. The case was initially filed in 2011 after a complaint was lodged by farmers who alleged that they were cheated during the acquisition of land for the construction of the SAD-BJP government’s flagship “New Chandigarh” project. The complaint alleged that Sukhbir Singh Badal and others had conspired to cheat the farmers by paying them a lower compensation amount than the market value. The Supreme Court’s decision has brought relief to the accused who have been fighting the case for over a decade.
